I graduated in Medicine at Bristol, gained my early medical training in Bristol and Bath, then specialty training in renal medicine in London at St Marys, Charing Cross and Hammersmith hospitals, during which time I also undertook transplant-related research.

I have been a consultant nephrologist at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust since 2000, with a particular interest in chronic kidney disease, vasculitis and the medical care of kidney transplant patients. I have had various management roles within the trust, including clinical lead for the Sussex Kidney Unit, then as a divisional chief (Specialised Services, then Medicine) from 2009-2014.

I have been involved with the production of national guidelines relating to renal care, including the NICE chronic kidney disease guidelines, co-authorship of haematuria management guidelines, influenza pandemic guidelines for renal units, and previous clinical lead for the DH CKD 18 Weeks pathway. I was previously a member of the Renal Association's executive committee and Clinical Affairs Board from 2004-8.

I am convinced of the importance of improving clinical communication and working across organisational barriers, and of the health care system working as a coordinated whole, centred around the patient, and see clinical senates as vital and unique organisations where these goals can be progressed.
